Yvonne Haugh is our Special Events Director.
Her duties include managing all non-sporting events to be held during the year.
Look for new programs such as dinners in the community building, bus trips, pancake breakfasts, as well as other new ideas.
We will also attempt to improve on long-standing programs such as the fireworks, Halloween Parade and movie nights.

Facilities

Red Lion Borough offers a full range of recreation programs under the auspices of the Recreation Commission. FAIRMOUNT PARK

Recreational facilities include Fairmount Park and Nitchkey Field.

Fairmount Park is an 11 acre tract of land with walking paths, a playground, volleyball and basketball courts and a picnic pavilion. 

Nitchkey Field on West Avenue consists of playing fields for softball/baseball and soccer/football, a playground and the Bowers Pavilion.
The Recreation Commission operates a concession stand during the summer months.


As a friendly reminder, if you walk your dog in our beautiful parks, please be considerate of others and clean up any "messes" created by your pet!

NITCHKEY FIELD

Immediately adjacent to the park is the Community Building.

The lower level contains the Youth Center which provides evening activities for teenagers and morning nursery school.

The upper level has an all-purpose room and kitchen which are used for recreation programs and are also available for rentals.  The Recreation Commission office is also housed in the upper level. 

Hall Rental
The upper level is available for rentals.  It contains a spacious all-purpose room that holds approximately 200 people and a full kitchen.  It is great for anniversary parties, family holiday get-togethers, birthday parties, graduations, meetings, etc.  Tables and chairs are included.  You can rent the facility with our without the kitchen.  Click here for a larger picture of the all-purpose room.  If you are interested in renting this facility, call the Recreation Office at 717-244-6896.  Click here to download a rental contract.

Bowers Pavilion

Red Lion Recreation has built its own baseball/softball training building.
This building is called the "Bowers Pavilion", and it was built using money that was donated several years ago from the estate of Dorothy Bowers.
It is located at Nitchkey Field.

There are several intended uses for this building:

  1. Indoor (Winter) baseball, softball batting cages

  2. Spring/Summer batting cages to replace and improve the old cages

  3. Camps and clinics

  4. Open pavilion area to view ballgames

  5. Team rental area

  6. Private instruction

We have 3 “tunnels” that are available for rental.

We have numerous pitching machines, including an “iron mike” for faster speeds.
We also have plenty of practice balls available, and l-screens if coaches wanted to pitch “live”.
The building is well lit and is heated.

We have the capability to handle baseball, fast-pitch softball or slow-pitch softball.
Machines can be easily adjusted to handle youth or adults.

Rental rates are $25.00 per hour for one cage, or $20.00 per hour for multiple cages.

Total building rental is available for other activities.

Also, for use in the spring, summer and fall, there is on “open-air” pavilion area that can be used for picnics or family gatherings.

  Youth Flag Football

 

Very exciting and popular program open to all boys and girls ages 6-10.  Only 5 players per team, and games are played on a smaller field.
Age divisions are 6-7 and 8-10.

No blocking or tackling - just running, throwing, catching, playing defense and learning plays.

Practices will be one or two nights per week, and games will be Sunday afternoons.
All games and practices are held in the Red Lion area.
This is not a travel league.

Program runs from early September through the end of October.

All players receive team jersey to use and keep when the season is over.

     GIRLS' FIELD HOCKEY LEAGUE

Open to all girls in grades 3 thru 6.  No experience needed.
1 or 2 weeknight practices per week.  Games will be held on Saturday afternoons.
All practices and games will be held on Red Lion area fields.
This is not a traveling league.
Season is scheduled to start September 4 and run through the end of October.

This program is designed to introduce girls to field hockey.
Emphasis will be put on participation and learning.

Fees are $40.00 for Borough resident and $50.00 for non-resident.

Parents are responsible for purchasing sticks, spikes and shin guards.
Red Lion Recreation will provide balls, shirts and mouthpieces.

  Summer Day Camp

 

Held Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM
in Fairmount Park and the Red Lion Community Building.
This program has been in Red Lion for over 30 years.
Lots of new activities for this year!!
It is a great way for kids to spend the summer.
Program is designed for children ages 5 – 12.

Registration will be held at Fairmount Park on Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16 from 9AM until 3PM.

The program runs from Wednesday, June 17 through Friday, August 7, 2009.
 

Daily activities will include crafts, games and contests with special visits from teachers and instructors.

PLEASE NOTE:  Most activities and field trips are "walking"; however, some are "driving" -- We sill need volunteers.

We will have a lunch break.  Parents are responsible to provide lunch for their children.

WINTER INDOOR BASEBALL TRAINING

 

Red Lion Recreation has built its own baseball/softball training building.

This building is called the “Bowers Pavilion”,

Red Lion Recreation is offering an indoor (winter) baseball training program.
We will have pitching machines, live pitching, hitting instruction.
Coaches will be on hand to help, and a small area to work on fielding.

The purpose of this program is not to take the kids away from other sports.
They should play basketball or wrestle or be involved in other activities this time of the year.
The purpose of this program is to help improve baseball skills in the off-season.
If the kids have an extra hour or two each week, and would like to try to improve their baseball skills, this is a great opportunity.

 The building will be available as follows:

Tuesdays (6:00-8:00)
Thursdays (6:00-8:00)

Other times are available by appointment.

All participants must obtain a “practice card” by stopping at the Recreation Office during open hours.
The program is scheduled to run from January 12 through the beginning of March.

Fees are $40.00 for Red Lion Borough residents and $50.00 for non-residents.
This gets you unlimited usage for the winter season.

ELEMENTARY BASKETBALL PROGRAM

 

Who? Open to all boys and girls in Kindergarten, first and second grades.  (Must be 6 as of 1/1/09.)

Teams will be chosen by elementary school wherever possible.

Teams will be co-ed unless there is a large number of children registered. 
Then we will choose boys' teams and girls' teams.

Where?

All games and practices will be held at Red Lion Fire Station.

When? Program will run for 7-8 weeks beginning the week of January 5, 2009.
1 weeknight practice per week and 1 game per week.
Games will be played Saturday afternoons.

If you have not already registered, you may stop at the Recreation Office during open hours.
Deadline for registration is December 19, 2008.

Cost? Registration fee is $65.00 for Red Lion Borough Residents and $75.00 for non-residents.

This program is designed to teach children the basic skills and fundamentals of basketball.
The main emphasis will be to have fun.  Competition will not be stressed.  Games will be low stress.
Lower baskets (8') and smaller balls will be used to teach proper skills and mechanics.

Coaches will run the games.  Referees will be used, and there will be instruction and teaching during the games.

Coaches will be needed for this program!
If you are interested in coaching, please let the coordinator know at the time of registration!

Red Lion Area Youth Fall Baseball

 

Practices will be 1 or 2 nights per week beginning the first week of August.
League games will begin the week after Labor Day and run until the middle of October.

 This is a traveling league – home games will be played at Nitchkey Field or Junior High School fields.

Age divisions (age as of May 1):
8 – 9                   10 – 12                  13 – 15

“A” & “B” divisions in all age groups

Red Lion Area Youth Spring/Summer Baseball and T-Ball News

The birth date which will be used for cut-offs in each age group will be April 30 (formerly July 1).
That means kids are eligible to play longer.  For example, if you turn 14 on June 5, you are eligible for 11-13 age group.

There will be different divisions in all age groups (except t-ball) so that all children will be able to play against other children with equal abilities.
Keep in mind age groups are t-ball (5-6-7), 8-10, 11-13, and 14-16.

 Please note registration dates (held at the Red Lion Community Building):

Saturday, Feb. 6 (1:00-4:00)

Sunday, Feb. 7 (1:00-3:00)

Monday, Feb. 8 (6:00 – 8:00)

At time of registration you will receive information on an optional fundraiser.
If you participate in the fundraiser, proceeds will go back to you !!!   Your child could play for free. !!! 
Fundraiser will be food products that sell very well such as pizza, pretzels and snack items.
We hope you use this fundraiser to help offset your registration cost.

Every year parents always ask when their child will practice and when will games be played.
Practice for the “A Division” travel teams will begin in mid-March (weather permitting). 
All other practices will begin the first week in April.
Teams will be selected during the last week in March.
Around the middle of April, all children should be put on teams, and know who their coach will be
and what nights they will practice and what nights their games will be held.
Games will normally be scheduled two evenings per week.
Also, for the 8-10 and possibly the 11-13 age groups, there may be some Saturday games.
Practice times will be up to each coach, and they may vary from once per week to three or four practices per week.
Most teams practice twice a week.  The season will conclude at the end of June or the beginning of July.
For most teams, there will be playoffs that should be completed by the middle of July.
Normally there will be no games played during the week of July 4th.

  SPRING 35 & OVER BASEBALL LEAGUE 

Spring baseball league playing on Sunday afternoons at Red Lion area fields.
In addition, all teams will play 1 game under the lights.

Tentative schedule to run from May 2 thru June 20 (8 week schedule).

To be eligible all players must be 35 years of age or older as of May 1.

Teams will be formed via a draft of all participants.
Number of teams to be determined by number of players registered.
Registration deadline is April 2, 2010.

Special rules:

12 – 14 players per team
Continuous batting order and free substitution
Pitching limit – 4 innings per game

Cost will be $75.00 per player which includes a hat and t-shirt plus paid umpires for the season.

The league will attempt to have official scorekeepers to be paid $10.00 per game.

  GIRLS' SOFTBALL

Red Lion’s Girls Softball Program will begin practices in mid-April.
League play will begin June 1 and end at the end of July.
All games and practices will be played in the evenings.
Teams will be entered in the York County Junior Girls Softball League.
All age groups will travel and play other teams in the York County area.
About ˝ of the games and all the practices will be held in the Red Lion area.

Age groups are as follows (age as of January 1, 2009)

 10 and under
12 and under
14 and under
16 and under
18 and under 

There are major and minor divisions in all age groups.
Minor division is more recreation in nature, and major will be a more competitive division.
In the 10 and under minor division there are 2 sub-divisions; “A” and “B”.
“A” teams will be all coach pitch, and “B” teams will all be player pitch.

Registration information:

Registration will be held in the Red Lion Community Building on the following dates:

Monday, March 3     6:30 - 8:30
Tuesday, March 4     6:30 - 8:30

If you can’t make the registration dates you may stop at the Recreation Office anytime after the registration dates during office hours.
Deadline for registration will be April 1.
Fees
will be $65.00 for a Red Lion Borough resident and $75.00 for non-residents.
Also, at time of registration, you may participate in an optional fundraiser.
This year, we will be selling “Gianni’s” products.
All profits from the sale will go to the parents, not Red Lion Recreation.
If you participate in the fundraiser, with a little effort, your child could play for free !!!

RED LION YOUTH CENTER

The Red Lion Youth Center was originally founded in 1945 and has throughout the years offered our youth a place of their own.
With a new staff and renewed spirit, the Youth Center continues to offer today's young adults a plethora of fun activities, including pool tournaments, movies nights, theme parties, and much more.

The center is open to young adults ages 12-16 every Saturday night from 7-10 PM and is in the lower level of the recreation building (190 S. Charles St). Special events are run at least once a month.

RED LION COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL
Red Lion Community Building—Lower Level

  There are several different programs being offered at the Red Lion Community Preschool.
We offer the following programs, and your child may be able to attend all three.

This class is geared in helping a child become more independent and being able to adapt to a group atmosphere while playing and learning with children of the same age.  This class enjoys art projects for their abilities, many songs and finger plays, individual and group play, along with several class activities and many field trips throughout the year.

 Four/Five Year Old Class
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
9:00 a.m. –11:15 a.m.

The four and five year old class is much more involved with kindergarten readiness.  The children  learn to write their names, do more in depth projects, more involved fun and exciting field trips to some great places.  We offer a very fun and loving atmosphere for all children to be able to learn and grow at their own pace!

Monday, Wednesday and Friday
11:15 - 1:15

Tuesday and Thursday
11:00 - 1:00

This is a day-to-day program for children ages 2 1/2 - 6 years old.  Children enjoy a fun play time, while having their lunch with us.  Parents provide a lunch and drink, and we supply all the fun and loving care.  This is a great program for moms to enjoy 2 hours to themselves to do errands, or whatever they choose.  Minimal charge per day!
