York Area Regional Police Department's May 19, 2010 – Chief Tom Gross, Mayor Steve Kopp and Mayor Beverly Scott announced the new Feet on the Street Program. The “Feet on the Street” program was implemented in Red Lion Borough from May through July 2009 as a pilot program, funded by the Red Lion Area Business Association. It proved to be a very successful venture. As a result, York Area Regional Police Department applied for, and was awarded, a grant to implement the program again this year and to expand it throughout the jurisdiction of the YARPD. The grant is funded under The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act 2009 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Formula Program. The “Feet on the Street” program introduces an officer from York Area Regional Police walking downtown districts of the boroughs and the commercial districts of the surrounding townships. The officer will patrol at various times during the week for a three month period beginning in May and ending in July. Officers on foot patrol are a proactive approach rather than a reactive approach to community policing. Studies have shown that foot patrol is the most effective method of crime deterrence available to urban environments. Along with the officer’s presence in the area helping to deter crime, foot patrols do even more. Acting as an ambassador-at-large, the officer will open lines of communication between the general public, business, and the police. The officer becomes integrated into the community rather than being perceived as an outside entity. By getting out of the cruiser and walking the street, the officer is approachable by children and adults alike. Beginning in May, watch for the “Feet on the Street” officer patrolling our communities. Stop by and say “hello”, welcoming this valuable addition to our community.
