Objective:
The primary objective of the Red Lion Borough Public Works Department’s
winter maintenance program is to provide roadway and street safety to the
traveling public utilizing the most reasonable, efficient and effective
procedures. To achieve this objective, it is essential that the deicing and
plowing operations be conducted in a professional way with the equipment being
properly maintained. Additionally, the deicing material must be sufficiently
stocked along with Borough personnel being properly trained and instructed in
the methods and procedures to be followed. The borough has approximately 28
miles of streets and alleys. The borough does not do winter maintenance on state
roads.
Normal Procedures:
The borough deploys personnel and equipment at
the onset of a winter storm. Priority is placed on major routes which are the
most heavily used by vehicular traffic. All streets and alleys are cleared of
snow and/or ice continuously until the conclusion of adverse weather conditions
cease. Then personnel can concentrate on parking lots, sidewalks and other
borough owned properties. You may see a borough truck passing by your local road
several times while it is performing winter maintenance on an adjacent street,
priority street or road. Although this may seem unfair and frustrating, it is
necessary in order to provide for the overall safety of the borough.
Emergency Procedures:
In the event of a severe winter storm, the Mayor will declare a snow
emergency. The Snow Emergency Declaration will be on the local radio and
television stations and on this website. All snow emergency routes in Red Lion
Borough have been identified with proper signage. After a snow emergency is
declared, it shall be unlawful at any time during the continuance of the
emergency for any person:
1. To park a
motor vehicle or to allow that vehicle to remain parked anywhere on any snow
emergency routes designated or:
2. To operate a
motor vehicle on any snow emergency route in such a manner or in such a
condition as to allow or permit such vehicle to become stalled on such route,
either by reason of the fact that the driving wheels of such vehicle are not
equipped with tire chains or effective tires or by reason of the fact that the
motor fuel supply of such vehicle has been allowed to become exhausted.
Please be aware that failure to abide by the
above is a violation of the Red Lion Borough Ordinance and may result in fines
and/or towing cost. The snow emergency routes are identified by signage. For a
complete listing of snow emergency routes, see the borough ordinance.
State Roads In Red Lion Borough:
Broadway, High Street, Main Street and Country Club Road are state roads and
PENNDOT is responsible for deicing and plowing. Please contact the local PENNDOT
maintenance office at 848-6230 for assistance.
Conclusion:
Winter weather in this part of the country is a fact of life. When it
happens, it surely will have an impact on your normal routine. Please remember
to slow down and be patient. Each and every storm is different; however, rest
assured that the Public Works Department will respond swiftly and effectively no
matter what the circumstances.
Just a Friendly Reminder:
Just a friendly reminder to property owners in Red Lion Borough; It is your
responsibility to keep your mailboxes, trees, shrubbery, basketball hoops, etc.
from overhanging the edge of the street. This is necessary to ensure the safety
of those activities that must occur close to the curb (snow plowing, street
sweeping, trash removal)
