Mission Statement

The Red Lion Mile Committee is an independent volunteer committee made up of Red Lion Redevelopment Commission members and interested citizens, serving as prudent stewards of local donations and community resources.  Our sole purpose is the creation, design and organization of the development of the Red Lion Mile walking/biking path within the Borough of Red Lion, York County, Pennsylvania.  The committee will advise the Red Lion Borough Council as to the best path to take with regards to the construction and completion of the Red Lion Mile Project for the benefit of all citizens, so as to create an asset in harmony with the community.

The Red Lion Mile Committee is a one-mile walking and biking path through the heart of Red Lion.
It starts at the Red Lion Historical Society Train Station,
continues under the North Charles Street bridge,
and runs out to Springwood Road,
running along the old Maryland and Pennsylvania ("Ma & Pa") railway line.
This is Red Lion's portion of York County's Rails to Trails Recreational Project.

The trail from North Franklin Street to Springwood Road is ready for use
and is being maintained by the Red Lion Public Works Department.

The section from North Charles Street to North Franklin Street is a major undertaking that requires engineering, storm water management and a design of the area around the bridge.  An additional right-of-way agreement must be negotiated for the land from the Charles Street bridge to North Main St.  The right-of-way is not an obstacle, but it must be negotiated.  The Borough feels confident that it can be negotiated quickly.

MA & PA COMMUNITY GREENWAY

The Ma & Pa Community Greenway partners have completed a greenway feasibility study for the former Maryland and Pennsylvania rail corridor from York to Felton.  The study explored the historic corridor to determine the feasibility of developing a recreation trail.  The Red Lion Mile has provided a great start for this trail and created momentum in the community.  This pilot project is envisioned to extend the Red Lion Mile to connect the three boroughs of Red Lion, Yoe and Dallastown.  Trailhead opportunities exist at each end of the pilot segments.  This section was chosen as a realistic portion of trail due to the dense population it will serve and its urban context.  Most of the proposed trail through Yoe is established on existing borough streets, reducing construction costs and low maintenance costs.  The segments form a "Y", with each of the three legs terminating in Red Lion, Dallastown and Yoe.  Numerous points of interest are found within this pilot area adding to its character.  The pilot project proposes approximately 3.3 miles of trail.
